A home gym that fits in a closet

Four pieces of kit cover almost every exercise, and none of them needs a spare room.

The short version

  • Adjustable dumbbells replace a whole rack in the space of a shoebox.
  • Bands and a doorway bar add pulling exercises that weights alone miss.
  • A decent mat is what makes you actually use the floor.

Start with resistance

Adjustable dumbbells are the centre of a small setup. One pair covers presses, rows, squats and curls, and changes weight in seconds instead of taking up a wall.

Look at the steps between weights. Small increments let you progress steadily instead of being stuck between too light and too heavy.

Add what weights cannot do

Resistance bands weigh almost nothing and add exercises that dumbbells do badly, like face pulls and assisted pull-ups. A set with handles and a door anchor covers the most ground.

A doorway pull-up bar needs no drilling. Measure the frame and the trim before ordering, because fit is the one thing a listing cannot promise.

Floor and feedback

A mat of 6 mm or more is kinder to knees and elbows, and it marks out a training space even in a small room.

A fitness tracker is optional, but a week of heart-rate and sleep data is often what turns a plan into a habit. If you do not run outdoors, skip GPS and enjoy a battery that lasts a week or more.
